Race Preview: 2016 Canyon Rumble Frozen Half/10K/5K (Madras)

This is a race I have talked about doing for the last two years. The first time it came into my radar I decided against it because there was snow in the forecast and I decided I was a wuss. Last year when it came up, the weather that was forecast was even worse than the year before, with ice, snow, mud and winds up to 40 mph. I opted out again. This year, I signed up early and am looking forward to my first Canyon Rumble Frozen Half!

I say all of this not to deter you from running this race, but instead to highlight the fact that the race runs right up into the Willow Canyon in West Madras, where the winds howl and the cold weather of a Central Oregon winter makes for a chilly and frozen run…hence the name! Oh, but the views!

The course is an out and back for all distances and features a little pavement, a little gravel and a lot of dirt mixed with rocky terrain. The course starts out uphill then sends you downhill for 5 miles. After turning around, you run uphill for 5 miles and then finish downhill (half marathon course). It is a worthy run that will humble any runner who intends to set a PR. However, there is little that can compare to the views of Mt Jefferson and other peaks as you run out into the canyon.

All proceeds will go to the MADras Runners Jack Watts Memorial Scholarship, which encourages and supports running in youth as they pursue higher education. All finishers will receive a gift. Afterwards, stick around for local brews and food INSIDE and out of the cold.

When: Saturday, December 2nd starting at 10am
Where: Madras Physical Therapy
Register: Online through Ultra Signup; $45 for half marathon, $30 for 10k, $20 for 5k
