Race Preview: 2015 Hero Up for Children’s Cancer (Tualatin)

Hero Up!

As a parent, I can't even imagine the emotions and repercussions of receiving a cancer diagnosis for your child, but every day 46 children and their parents get these news. You're invited to put on your running shoes and your best superhero costume to raise money for children's cancer research at the annual Hero Up for Children's Cancer 5k and half marathon on September 5th in Tualatin. And for those not able to attend, there also is a virtual race option, in which you will receive your shirt and bib in the mail, then run the distance at your own chosen time and location.

The half marathon and 5k will both start and finish near picnic shelter #2 in Cook Park. The park is a great location for a race start/finish area since it offers plenty of parking, flush toilets, shade under the trees, and a playground to entertain the kids. The 5k course takes runners and walkers through Durham neighborhoods and multipurpose paths in Cook Park. The Half Marathon course starts the same as the 5k, but then also takes runners south of the Tualatin river to run a loop through Tualatin.

The 1-mile kids run will start at 10am, when most 5k runners should have finished their race. Afterwards there will be awards given to the top finishers. While costumes are not required to participate in the event, there will be a costume contest, and categories include but are not limited to Best Look-a-like, Best Original Superhero, Best Duo, Best Group, Best Sidekick, Best Villain, Best Kids Costume, and Most Creative.

At the end of the day you can rest assured that you supported a great cause. 100% of net proceeds are donated to the Keller Research Lab at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. Additional donations are also accepted.

  1. a mile is a bit long for a kids run. Last year I believe it was somewhere between 100-200 yards
