Kickstarter of the Week: Planet Sun

Product:Planet Sun – Sun Protection Performance Clothing
Location: Kailua, Hawaii
Link: Kickstarter
Current Goal: $8,878 of $35,000
End: July 23, 2015

It has been HOT this June and July. As someone who generally doesn’t wear sunscreen ( I know, I know), I have bene lathering myself up during my runs with frequency this summer. The latest Kickstarter of the Week highlights Planet Sun -Sun Protection Performance Clothing. From their campaign:

Skin Cancer Rates are on the rise worldwide.  In the United States alone, nearly 5 million people are treated for skin cancer each year, and regrettably, some 9,000 people die from Melanoma. The matter is so concerning here that, in July 2014, the US Surgeon General issued the first-ever “Call to Action to Prevent Skin Cancer,” urging all partners in prevention to address the disease as a major public health problem requiring immediate action… we are here to help.

We also want you to know that there has been some incredible advancements in textile technology in the past few years, resulting in fabrics with unsurpassed performance and comfort – It ain’t like running in a cotton T-shirt anymore! Fabrics are available today that not only block Ultraviolet (UV) radiation, but block heat (infrared) as well, reducing skin temperature, and adding a whole other level of “feel good” to your game.

So, your pledge will not only help us to produce these shirts in all the sizing and colors specified, it will also help us grow a capability to manufacturer sun protection clothing in a place with some of the highest UV index levels on Earth. Makes sense to us!

If you are the type of person who runs during peak UV hours like me (I have to run on my lunch break), or even if you are outside and need protection (we all do), then these may do the trick.

You can pledge to this campaign for as little as $16. The shirt/apparel options will start at the $40 level for a sunwing top and go up from there. Shipping won’t start until at least September or October of this year, but you will have something in your closet for those fall runs.
