The Summer Solstice Urban Adventure Run was SO. MUCH. FUN. It was awesome. If you love events like Fit Right’s First Thursday runs, you will love this race. I don’t consider myself particularly adventurous–honestly, I am not super fond of stepping outside of my comfort zone, and am definitely not a fan of surprises! But I was given the opportunity to participate last year through my blog, and I just couldn’t say no to Sherri McMillan’s excitement about the whole thing. She does a great job putting on local events, so I knew that this would be a good one if I could manage to put aside my anxiety for one afternoon! So I recruited two friends to do this with me last year, and we had a BLAST. Even before the event was over, we were talking about how we wanted to do this again!

Each team of 1-4 people is given a clue that will take them to one of 15 locations in downtown Vancouver. At each location, they will complete a physical or mental challenge, which will earn them another clue and a raffle ticket. There is a two hour time limit, and while it is not required that you complete all of the challenges, you won’t get as many raffle tickets. Last year’s event featured a variety of family-friendly challenges, including trivia, eating dried worms, keg rolling, rock climbing, and skateboarding. After the race, there were snacks and beer/wine for sale, live music, and TONS of raffle prizes. The ratio of raffle prizes to participants was very high, which was awesome.
And be sure to show up in your craziest outfits–there is a pre-race costume contest as well. Mechell, Cari and I dressed up as a trio of Wonder Women, and there were slices of cake, Where’s Waldo, and a variety of other amusing ensembles.
The Summer Solstice Urban Adventure Race benefits the Clark County Food Bank by donating a portion of the race entry fee, and also by collecting food donations at the race. So not only is this incredibly fun, but it also benefits local community members in need. I can’t say enough positive things about this event, and definitely encourage everyone to sign up for it.
