Race Preview: Horse Lake Half and 5-mile trail runs – Wenatchee, WA

When I was a kid growing up in Seattle, we used to make the trip out to Wenatchee for the annual cherry blossom event. Even as a young man, I still recall thinking the trees were spectacular and really unlike anything we had back home. Years later, and now a hardcore trail runner, the thought of traveling to Wenatchee for a race sounds like a great idea!

Now in its third year, the Horse Lake Trail Run events not only offer stellar views of the North Cascades and the Wenatchee River, but part of your race entry goes to trail construction and maintenance for the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust. The races are run on single and double track trails that are part of the Homestead Trail System as well as the Apricot Crisp Trail and a few old ranch roads, which promise  very challenging courses. Check out the course map for the Half here and the 5-miler here.

OOOOO, pretty flowers!

Runners are sure to see some amazing flowers as this run is in May, including balsamroot and lupine. After the race, be sure to explore the local area as Wenatchee and the surrounding towns have much to offer. More information about local running can be found here. Looking for a place to stay? Check out the local lodging.

Parking will be limited (only 80 spots), but shuttles have been arranged to and from the local Walmart on race day. The event will have three aid stations with water, energy drink and gels. You may want to consider bringing some of your own as this area can sometimes get a little warm in May.

The Horse Lake events are the first of the four-event Wenatchee Valley Trail Run Series put on by RunWenatchee.
