100: Head/Heart/Feet film screening at Kiggins Theatre and GIVEAWAY

100: Head/Heart/Feet

100: Head/Heart/Feet

The draw for me is… when you’re running those kinds of distances, it breaks you down to, what I feel, is what we all are, at our very human core…that pure state, of just being out there on the trail. –Zak Wieluns, ultrarunner

I went with [Zak] in 2011 for his first attempt at the Vermont 100… It was the most beautiful athletic event that I had ever seen. And it was at that moment that I said, this might be a story.

–Mike Mooney, director of 100: Head/Heart/Feet

Even if you have no interest in running more than a 5k (or even five minutes), 100: Head/Heart/Feet will inspire you. This documentary follows ultrarunner Zak Wieluns as he attempts the Vermont 100 Endurance Race for the third time. The Vermont 100 is a 100 mile foot race with a 30 hour time limit and one of the oldest 100 mile races in the US–a race that Zak had attempted twice before, and DNF’d after collapsing at mile 92 the first year, and at mile 40 the next year, after a cyst behind his knee burst. Directors Mike Mooney and William Peters utilized Kickstarter to raise over $17,000 to finish filming the movie, which was completed in 2013, which coincided with the 25th anniversary of the Vermont 100.

What I like about this movie is that Zak isn’t a professional athlete. He makes a living as a bank financial analyst, and started running in 2002 to impress his then-girlfriend Lenka, who is now his wife, and her father. He’s a normal guy who has passion and commitment and people who help him try to achieve his goals. Runner and photographer Jerod Foster has a great recap of the movie here, and mentions that the movie is about more than just running a lot of miles–it’s about accomplishing something big, and about the people who support you during that journey, whether its running or something else.

The film is travelling to only half a dozen locations across the US, including a stop in Vancouver, WA on Saturday, March 7th.  This will be the only screening of this movie in the PNW region, so be sure to mark your calendar!
