January is always a hard month for good new music in my opinion. People are still suffering from the post-holiday lull and executives in the music industry feel album sales will be slow as a result. I, however, have been pleasantly surprised by the quality of the January releases in 2014 so far. I typically only find 1 or 2 that have any lasting power, but have stumbled across a few new artists I had not come across before (Timothy Bloom and Misterwives) and some old familiarities (Switchfoot and Number One Gun) that really set the bar high. I am not going to pretend that these are all-time great albums, but solid enough to keep my attention over the past 31 days or so.
I ran two races in January – the Hangover Run and the Cascade Half Marathon, the latter one consisting solely from the artists in the playlist. It was a solid 31 days of running, and I ended up meeting my goals for the month (100 miles and 1 half-marathon). Thanks to these albums, it made my life a little easier.
