Run Oregon Test Kitchen: Bissinger’s Chocolate

I’m not a fan of food shaming. I think we’ve moved past the time when it was commented that the only reason to run was to burn enough calories to justify eating more food, or when you had to work out before allowing yourself to enjoy a treat. That’s some antiquated thinking. Eat how you want, run how you want, and enjoy the things you enjoy without feeling like you need to earn them.

That said, our Run Oregon Test Kitchen features do tend to lean toward the healthier side of things, which probably makes sense for a running-focused website. But with Halloween coming up and the holiday season right around the corner, we thought it was a good time to highlight one of our favorite candy makers: Bissinger’s Chocolate.

Beyond the tasty chocolate goodness Bissinger’s brings to the table, one of the things we really appreciate is its variety of themed assortments. With each holiday, it seems like there are more than a handful of fun, creative options for satisfying a sweet tooth, whether you’re shopping for yourself or looking for a gift that’s a little more interesting than your standard box of chocolates.

For Halloween, Bissinger’s offers a 13-piece Black Coffin Gift Box. And yes, it’s every bit as fun as it sounds. Inside, you’ll find a mix of caramels and truffles in flavors that feel right at home this time of year:

  • Dark Blood Orange Caramel Skull
  • Dark Double Chocolate Caramel
  • Milk Wrapped Caramel Present
  • Milk Versailles Vanilla Caramel
  • Milk Pecan Pie Truffle
  • Dark Apple Pie Truffle
  • Milk Pumpkin Pie Truffle
  • Dark French Vanilla Truffle B
  • Dark Chocolate Silk Pie Truffle
  • Dark Sea Salt Caramel
  • Milk Pecan Caramel
  • Milk Pumpkin Spice Caramel
  • Dark Cinnamon Almond Caramel

It’s a fun assortment of chocolates that feels a little more grown-up than the candy you’ll be handing out on Halloween night. The seasonal flavors are a nice touch, and the coffin-shaped gift box makes the whole thing feel more like a Halloween treat than just another box of candy.

But the adults don’t get to have all the fun. Bissinger’s also has Milk Chocolate Halloween Cookies that are both tasty and downright cute. I mean, just look at these little guys!

They’re the kind of treats that might make you pause for a second before eating them. Emphasis on might. There’s still time to order Halloween goodies, but if your household is already overflowing with candy and you’re worried about adding even more to the pile, Bissinger’s has you covered there, too. Its Thanksgiving and Christmas assortments are already available, giving you a chance to get a head start on holiday gifting.

At the end of the day, running and eating don’t have to be a transaction. You don’t need to log extra miles to earn a piece of chocolate, and you certainly don’t need to feel guilty about enjoying a seasonal treat. Sometimes, a good run and a really good piece of chocolate are just two good things that happen to go together.
