Living in the Pacific Northwest, we sometimes act like sunscreen is only for destination races or those rare “surface of the sun” August long runs. But the reality is that if you spend enough time outside logging miles, volunteering at races, hiking, crewing, spectating, or just existing in the elements, sun exposure stacks up whether it’s 95 and cloudless or overcast and drizzly. Sun protection has become something I take more seriously over the years, especially after my dad battled melanoma.

That seriousness, however, has never translated into enthusiasm for sunscreen itself. Most runners probably know the routine: greasy hands, stinging eyes halfway through a run, weird scents, and that unmistakable “I am fully coated in lotion” feeling. It’s often more of a necessary evil than something you actually enjoy using.

Recently, I got the chance to try some products from Zealios, a brand that was new to me but immediately felt aimed at a very specific audience: people who actually move. Not “beach photoshoot active,” but legitimately sweaty, grimy, training-through-the-elements active.
That focus shows up pretty quickly in their overall approach. Zealios feels less concerned with lifestyle branding and more interested in making products that survive real-world training. The company’s entire ethos seems centered around endurance athletes and outdoor activity, and the products seem built around the idea that sunscreen should hold up when your day includes sweat, heat, water, friction, and hours outside.
And honestly? I appreciate that they let the products do most of the talking. There’s no over-the-top gimmicky feel here. Just straightforward gear-for-your-skin energy.

Zealios currently offers a few different sunscreen options depending on what you’re looking for: a SPF 30 mineral formula featuring 20% zinc oxide, a SPF 45 hybrid option with 8% zinc, and an SPF 50 Ultralight + Hydration version that skips zinc altogether. They also offer a variety pack, which honestly feels like a smart move if you’re trying to figure out which formula best fits your training style or skin preferences. Across the lineup, the formulas are designed to block 98% of harmful UVA and UVB rays while also carrying the FDA’s highest water resistance rating of 80 minutes.
The Lipguard SPF 28 is also one of those easy-to-overlook products that probably deserves more attention than it gets. A lot of us (myself included) focus on sunscreen for our face, shoulders, and arms while completely forgetting that lips take a beating out on the run too. Between sun, wind, dry air, and long hours exposed to the elements, having a long-lasting layer of protection there ends up being more important than many runners realize.
For me personally, one of the biggest wins has simply been comfort. The formulas are unscented, which I immediately appreciated, and as somebody whose skin can occasionally get irritated by skincare products, I’ve had zero issues so far. More importantly, they haven’t given me that heavy, greasy feeling that often makes sunscreen feel like an extra layer you can’t wait to wash off after a run.

Beyond sunscreen, Zealios also makes a broader range of athlete-focused products including shower and body care items, anti-chafe options, and recovery products. It’s clearly a brand that understands endurance sports don’t begin and end with the run itself.
