I’ll be honest right out of the gate—this is an interesting one. We care about health, and while we like highlighting interesting options for runners, we’re usually pretty measured when it comes to outright recommendations. Especially with health products, where what works great for one person might do nothing for another.
Not “bad interesting,” just… new territory. As runners, we’re used to dialing in shoes, fueling, hydration, recovery tools—you name it. But lung health? That’s usually something we only think about when something feels off – or when your kids have brought home another bug from their school.
Enter Climatic and their L Max, which they’re calling the world’s first “breathable daily lung health product.” It’s essentially a small handheld device that delivers a quick inhaled dose—under 30 seconds—designed to help clear your airways and make breathing feel easier.
Yeah. It’s a different lane.
The Idea (and Why It’s Interesting for Runners)
The premise actually makes some sense when you think about it.
We take something like 20,000 breaths a day, and for runners—especially those training in cities, pollen-heavy seasons, or smoky summers—that’s a lot of exposure to dust, pollution, and whatever else is floating around out there.
Climatic’s pitch is simple: instead of treating lung issues reactively, why not support them daily—like brushing your teeth?
The L Max delivers a blend of ingredients directly to the lungs (not through digestion), aiming to help clear mucus and open up airflow. In early testing, they’re reporting improved mucus clearance and a noticeable bump in how easily people felt they could breathe during workouts.
Let’s Talk About the Science (Without Getting Too Deep in the Weeds)
There is real science behind the idea that airway clearance and breathing efficiency matter for performance. Even small restrictions in airflow can make hard efforts feel harder, especially at higher intensities.
Alot of what’s currently out there around L Max is early data, internal testing, and not yet widely peer-reviewed.
Climatic does have some early research to point to however. In collaboration with Mount Sinai Medical Center, a single use of L Max showed more than a 50% improvement in mucus clearance in an in vivo model, with effects lasting up to eight hours. According to the company, those results have been replicated and are being prepared for peer-reviewed publication after several years of research led by Dr. Dale Christensen.
That doesn’t mean it’s wrong. It just means this isn’t the same level of “proven” as, say, carbs helping endurance performance. Yet.
So, this lands squarely in that “interesting, promising, but still emerging” category.
Active Ingredients:
- Sodium Bicarbonate: Balances pH for optimal mucus expansion and easier clearance
- Citric Acid: Reduces calcium in mucus to improve mobility
- Arginine: Supports nitric oxide production for circulation and airflow
- Forskolin: Promotes natural airway hydration
- Theobromine: Supports optimal ciliary beating for efficient mucus movement
What It Feels Like (The Real Question)
This is where a product like this either clicks… or doesn’t.
The idea of taking one inhale in the morning and feeling like your lungs “open up” before a run is appealing—especially if you’ve ever had those days where your breathing just feels tight or off for no obvious reason.
And if you have allergies when the seasons change or have run through wildfire smoke in Oregon the past few years, you probably don’t need convincing that your lungs take a beating sometimes.
That said, this isn’t going to magically turn you into a different runner. Think of it more like as a tool in the toolbox, especially if you are looking to maximize your running prowess or struggle with lung capacity and clearance.
The Runner Takeaway
This is not a must-have. It’s not something I’d tell every runner to go out and buy immediately. But…it is something I’d keep an eye on.
If you’re someone who:
- Notices breathing limitations during workouts
- Trains in less-than-ideal air conditions
- Or just enjoys experimenting with new performance tools
- Has breathing issues – perhaps due to allergies
…it might be worth trying for yourself and seeing how it feels.
Because at the end of the day, breathing is kind of the ultimate limiter in endurance sports—and it’s also one of the least optimized.
Bottom Line
Climatic L Max sits in a really interesting space—somewhere between wellness, performance, and early-stage science.
It’s not a magic fix. It’s not fully proven. But it’s also not a crazy idea. And honestly, that’s kind of what makes it worth talking about.
