Kings Market San Juan Island Runs: A Bucket-List Race Adventure

Spring Break 2025 finally gave my family the chance to visit the San Juan Islands. We stayed on Orcas Island, where I got to explore Moran State Park multiple times—though the weather was a wet, chaotic mess. We also toured some of the other islands, stopping at Lopez Island for tree climbing and making a quick jaunt to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island—just because. That visit was far too short, and we vowed to return in nicer weather.

Now, the Kings Market San Juan Island Runs feel like the perfect opportunity.

This summer event – June 20th- event offers a marathon, half marathon, and 10K, paired with a multi-sport event if Triathlons are more your style. While the islands were stunning in the spring, summer promises an entirely new level of beauty.

The marathon is point-to-point, giving runners the chance to experience nearly the entire island. Starting at the southwest tip, the course winds through multiple parks—both state and national—before heading toward the northwest corner and looping back to the resort. The scenery is incredible: rolling hills, water views, and the chance to spot Orca whales while running! The race finishes at the heart of San Juan Island at Lakedale Resort. The half marathon and 10k are loops that start and finish at the resort as well.

After the race, runners and families can enjoy live music, catered post-race food, and a full slate of family activities at the finish.

If you’ve never been to the San Juan Islands, this is one of those bucket-list destinations worth the effort. Getting there takes a bit of commitment—driving and hopping a ferry—but once you arrive, you’ll understand why visitors – much like myself – never want to leave.

These islands have a relaxed, welcoming vibe set against some of the most stunning scenery in the Pacific Northwest. Experiencing a run here—whether it’s the marathon, half, or 10K—is a special way to take it all in, combining adventure, breathtaking views, and a truly unforgettable atmosphere.
