I’ll never forget those hours in elementary school clicking through “The Oregon Trail” on a black‑and‑green screen. Dodge dysentery, hunt buffalo, ford rivers—these were life‑or‑death decisions before we even knew what a real hill was. Now, Oregon City keeps that pioneer spirit to life on the pavement with the Oregon Trail Game 5K.
On Saturday, May 23, 2026, join runners and walkers for a unique twist on your typical 5K.
Check out our recap of the inaugural event!
This isn’t a mud crawl or obstacle course—this is a running adventure with decisions. Inspired by that classic computer game, participants make choices along the course that mimic life on the Oregon Trail. Do you ford the river or float it? Stop to “hunt” or keep moving toward the finish? What you choose affects your game score, which you’ll receive alongside your chip‑timed result.
Because of the decision stations and interactive elements, this course may not be the fastest 5K out there—but it will be one of the most memorable.
The Course & Sights
But while it may not be blazing fast, it definitely has unique views. The race starts and finishes at the End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center in historic Oregon City. Course highlights include:
- Running through historic downtown Oregon City
- Passing the iconic 100‑year‑old Municipal Elevator
- Willamette River and Willamette Falls views
- The McLoughlin neighborhood and landmarks like Carnegie Library, McLoughlin House, and Barclay House
- A challenging 223‑step stair climb near Singer Hill Falls
- Scenic wooded stretches through Waterboard Park
It’s playful, historic, and full of character—exactly the kind of 5K that’s fun to run and fun to talk about afterward.
Family & Community
The day kicks off at 8a, and there’s something for everyone. Along with the main 5K, the event includes:
- A 1‑mile walk (perfect for families or walkers)
- A free Kids’ Fun Run for ages 11 and under, with short untimed distances
It’s a great way to get the whole family involved, support the schools, and enjoy one of Oregon’s most charming small cities. The race is produced by the Oregon City Schools Foundation, with all proceeds supporting local schools.
The Oregon Trail Game 5K is equal parts nostalgia and community spirit. Whether you grew up trying not to die of dysentery on a floppy disk or you’re just looking for a fun, purposeful spring run, this race offers a playful twist that’s distinctly Oregon.
