Supercharged Strides: The Mizuno Wave Rebellion Pro 3

My first pair of real running shoes was from Mizuno—a brand I’d grown up trusting. Playing baseball as a kid, my cleats were always Mizuno, so when I formally transitioned into running a decade after my last baseball game, Mizuno felt like the natural choice. At Run Oregon, we’ve tested a handful of Mizuno shoes over the years. However, it’s been more than two years since our last Mizuno review, so we were excited to reconnect with the brand through the Mizuno Wave Rebellion Pro 3.

See all our reviews of Mizuno here!

Since our last review, Mizuno has undergone what feels like a rebirth. We recently caught up with them and they gave us a sneak peek into their future plans: four clear-cut shoe categories that make it super simple to find the right shoe.

  • Speed (unique geometries built for fast – like this one)
  • Swift (elevated trainers)
  • Cruise (daily trainers)
    • Wave Rider – now in version 28
    • Wave Inspire – now in version 20
  • Float (high stack and comfort)

Needless to say, this has catapulted Mizuno back into the spotlight.

Looks:

It’s impossible to start anywhere but with the visuals of this shoe. Just look at it—this Wave Rebellion Pro 3 stands out with its blue and sea green colorway. The simple and muted tones are unexpectedly fun to look at, offering a unique aesthetic without being over the top. The aggressive heel cut introduces a futuristic edge to the overall design.

This design strikes a balance—it’s distinctive yet approachable. You’re either going to love its unique vibe or prefer something more conventional.

Construction & Fit:

If you didn’t know already, the Wave Rebellion Pro 3 falls firmly into the “super shoe” category. These types of shoes are all about speed, combining high-tech features with comfy cushioning to help you crush your fastest marathon times. The shoe is built to push you forward, keep you feeling fresh, and stay super light on your feet.

Specs:

  • Weight: ~7.6oz (M9)
  • Drop: 4mm
  • Heel Stack Height: 40mm/36mm

Upper:

The upper is made from engineered mesh—light, breathable, and with no real complaints from me. What surprised me most was the forefoot platform. I was expecting something super thin and narrow, but instead, it felt closer to a standard fit—plenty wide enough for comfort.

This shoe is clearly built for speed and features a high stack height. While it’s stable overall, thanks to a decent forefoot base, it’s definitely not a stability shoe. Just keep that in mind if you’re tackling tight turns, and you’ll be fine.

Lockdown was solid, with the added support strap on the inside doing a great job of securing the midfoot. The shoe felt roomy enough overall, which is refreshing since narrow platforms and streamlined fits often feel way too constricting—no issues with that here.

That said, I do think the laces are a little too long, which can be a minor annoyance but nothing deal-breaking.

Midsole:

Let me just say—holy crap, these things are bouncy. It’s hard to even describe. I’ve never owned a pair of “super shoes” before, so I can’t cross-compare across brands, but I can confidently say I’ve never experienced a springier ride. The magic comes from the Enerzy XP foam—a super lightweight midsole material that’s insanely responsive. You can literally squeeze it with your fingers, and it’s like the foam is just begging to hit the pavement.

Of course, the bounce isn’t the whole story. Mizuno adds a carbon fiber-infused Wave Plate for extra structure and stability, which helps balance out the foam’s natural squishiness. And that 11-degree angle cutout in the heel I mentioned above? It’s not just for looks—it’s actually engineered for speed. Starting right at the midfoot, it compresses and then propels you forward with every step.

The construction actually changes the angle in which your foot sits in the shoe to give a better midfoot strike -and makes it so this HUGE stack (about 50+mm in the midsole is actually legal. It’s like the shoe is built to keep you moving fast.

When I laced these up, I couldn’t help but push the pace. Whether it was the excitement of trying something new or the shoe doing its thing, I felt faster. I wouldn’t call these an everyday shoe, but I’m absolutely itching to test them out in a half marathon.

That said, the design and feel do take some getting used to. It’s not your average ride. For the first few wears, I couldn’t stop thinking about how the shoe felt underfoot—which isn’t ideal. The midsole geometry forces you to strike midfoot, so you kind of have to “learn” how to run in them.

Outsole:

The G3 Outsole, a staple of this shoe since the beginning, offers excellent coverage while keeping things lightweight. It’s impressively grippy and seems built to last, making it a standout feature. Honestly, no complaints here—it does exactly what you’d want from an outsole.

Overall:

The Mizuno Wave Rebellion Pro 3’s are pure fun, and they’ll definitely make you want to pick up the pace. While they might take a little adjustment, the combination of bounce, propulsion, and speed-focused design makes them a solid choice for race day.
