The Oregon Coast is one of the best places in the whole wide world. And this is a running blog so let’s talk about a race that provides miles alongside that wonderful place…

Newport Marathon provides 26.2 miles in a small-town setting with lots of support. The event starts at Yaquina Bay State Park, and then after a short loop through some neighborhoods, goes for a long out and back alongside Yaquina Bay and River. And just when you start feeling like you are running in the middle of nowhere, there is another runner to wave at or an aid station to cheer you on.

I’ve completed this marathon twice, and the one aid station I didn’t try was the oyster “shooters” at mile 11/19. Instead I was grateful for all of the water, electrolyte drinks, and other supplies at the stations every 2 miles.

The finish line is part of a lovely downhill during the last .2 miles of the course. Marathon and half marathon participants use the same start and finish lines, with the half marathoners getting a closer turnaround point. Finishers have access to food and drink, along with space to show off their finisher medal and new t-shirt. And there are nearby showers available at the high school for $2.

For the rest of race weekend, enjoy Newport Beach and get those tired feet into the water. If it’s cold, then you won’t need a recovery ice pack.
