There are surely some notorious runs around these parts, and the ORRC Hagg Mud Runs brings us one of the races every runner in Oregon should experience. Some do this race every year and some do it once and never want to do it again, but it’s definitely one that you should get on your calendar at least once.
This race, an institution since 2001, includes a 25k and a 50k and it will have you running around Henry Hagg Lake during possibly some of the worst weather in February. There are years where it’s muddier than others, and you might get rained on or not, but you are pretty much guaranteed to get dirty either way.

The views from Hagg are really nice, with the lake always at your side save for a few times on the nearby roads and parking lots. The course is almost entirely on trails and they go up and down like a slip-and-slide through the mud. Some people absolutely love getting dirty out there and I’ve personally had great fun doing the 25k. My only advice is BRING WARM CLOTHES for after.

The 50k will be on Saturday February 17th . You’ll begin with a loop around the parking lot and approximately 3 miles of out-and-back on a gravel road to spread out the runners a bit before heading to the narrow trails. Runners will then run around Hagg Lake in a counterclockwise loop twice on single track trails. There will be 5 aid stations including the start/finish area.
Also on Saturday is the “25k+” course. This course consists of the first loop of the 50k and runners will take off with the 50k runners at the same time. This 25k will actually be about 17 miles, hence the “+” in the race title. There is no cutoff time for this distance.
Lastly, the competitive 25k will occur on Sunday, February 18th. Runners will run around Hagg Lake in a counterclockwise direction and hit 2 aid stations.

If doing one of these events is not enough for you, consider doing the Hagg Mud Double, which means running the 50k on Saturday and the 25k on Sunday. In the past, runners who took on the Hagg Mud Double received a Hagg Mud Growler filled with the beverage of their choice, but organizers are looking into this for the 2024 year, so stay tuned. There’s also the Baby Double, which means you can run the 25k on Saturday and then again on Sunday.
This event is a cupless event, so there will NOT be paper cups at the aid stations in an effort to keep trails clean of debris. Please plan to bring your own handhelds, hydration packs, or reusable cups. There will be pitchers of water and electrolyte drink at the stations for you, as well as rapid-fill spigots on most of the water jugs.
Come get dirty at Hagg!!
