Can You Smell what Run The Rock is Cookin’?

As we all enjoy the end of Fall, sometimes it seems like November is ages away. However, Alpine Running has some epic runs up ahead, so I hope you’ve been training.

The Run the Rock events are back on November 11-12, 2023 to offer more spectacular trail running at Smith Rock in Central Oregon. The events will be split over the weekend, with the 50 Miler and 20 Miler on Saturday and the 50K and Half Marathon on Sunday (anyone keen for a double feature?).

50M | Saturday, November 11th, 2023 | Start time: 6:00 AM | Price: $170

The 50M course will be twice around a 25-mile loop with about 6,600 feet of gain and loss. Runners will get about 80% of this course on singletrack with 7 fully stocked aid stations and 1 minimal and unmanned aid stations. There are 2 cut-off times: aid station 5 (mile 25.5) at 12:00 PM and aid station 8 (mile 40.7) by 4 PM. Drop bags are allowed at AS4, which is the start/finish aid station, but sorry, no pacers allowed! Also, the 50M is worth 4 UTMB points.

20M | Saturday, November 11th, 2023 | Start time: 8:00 AM | Price: $125

The 20M course starts and finishes at Skull Hollow Campground. This distance is the only of the 4 options that will take runners up to the top of Gray Butte. Those who tackle this race can look forward to 4,400 feet of gain and loss as well as gorgeous views from Mt. Adams in Washington to Mt. Bachelor. 80% of the route is on singletrack and 20% is on double track and dirt. There are 3 aid stations.

There is no shuttle on Saturday for the 50M and 20M. Runners will want to park at (or near) Skull Hollow Campground. Carpool if you can!!

Half Marathon | Sunday, November 12th, 2023 | Start time: 8:30 AM | Price: $115

This challenging and scenic trail half is 13.1 miles with 90% on singletrack and roughly 2,500 feet of elevation gain. Check out views of the Cascades and Monkey Face!! Runners will have 3 aid stations for this course and stop to enjoy the views – there is no cutoff!

50K | Sunday, November 12th, 2023 | Start time: 7:00 AM | Price: $145

The 50K is generally along the same course as the 50M, but runners have the privilege of doing a short loop up Misery Ridge to begin, passing the flanks of Monkey Face. This course has about 5,500 feet of gain and loss with ~85% on singletrack with 4 aid stations. There is one cut-off time: aid station 4 at 3 PM. Sorry, no drop bags or pacers for this distance!

Due to limited parking at the start/finish line, runners signed up for the Half Marathon and 50K must park off-site at DD Ranch . There will be a free shuttle and parking.

**Please note that Alpine Running is cupless, so be prepared at the aid stations to have your own cup / bottle / bladder / etc. Also, sorry but no dogs are allowed on the course due to permit conditions!**

Longboard Louie’s will be at the finish line with a post-race meal and all race participants will get a custom award at the finish .. You’ll have earned it!! The top 3 male and female winners will receive prizes from sponsors.

The beneficiary of this event is the Ridgeview High School cross country team!
