Good Moves on the Trail with the Salomon Ultra Glide

Untitled

There’s no denying that Salomon is a mega brand on the trail running scene. From shoes to hydration packs to shorts / shirts / hats, you’ll see it on any trail. I love my own Salomon gear – many are staples and must-haves on all my runs. Their shoes are known for either being high drop and luggy, or minimal and light-weight. They’ve introduced a new shoe this year, though, the Ultra Glide, that has the cushioned-but-lightweight balance for their footwear line-up.Untitled

One of my favorite features of Salomon shoes is the Quicklace system. Just tug, slide the locking mechanism down, tuck the excess into the tongue, and never again will you have to stop to tie your shoe. Some people like different lacing techniques to help with heel slipping or pressure points, which this doesn’t allow for, but if those aren’t your needs, the Quicklace is hard to beat. The upper has a breathable (i.e. well-draining) mesh with overlays for additional support and “wings” for a little extra stability on the sides. The heel cup is nicely cushioned without feeling bulky.Untitled

I’m a runner who prefers a wider toe box and Salomon historically feels quite narrow to me and this shoe follows that pattern. It’s not overly snug, and if your feet aren’t as finicky as mine it won’t be noticeable, but keep in mind this isn’t a “natural” toe box as found in other brands.

Once again sporting the Contragrip rubber outsole for grip and durability, in addition to 4mm lug depth, these shoes are great for mixed terrain (all day adventures if not too technical, while also being a decent travel shoe with door-to-trail). They also have an Energy Surge midsole and a rocker shape to allow for a really natural stride without feeling over-cushioned nor too minimal. With a 6mm drop, they are a nice compromise from the higher Speedcross and lower S/Labs.

The new Ultra Glide is a great middle-of-the-road (trail?) option in the Salomon lineup if you like their fit and features but wanted a bit more cushion and/or a little less drop.
