While many ultramarathons require distant travel and extensive support teams, ORRC’s Autumn Leaves 50 / 50 is right in Portland’s backyard at Champoeg Park. And with a looped course and well-stocked aid stations, solo runners have all the support they need.
The race has two distance options: 50K or 50 miles. The course is a 10K loop, primarily flat and primarily a paved bike path with some dirt track portions. So the 50K runners will be headed over the river and through the woods five times while the 50-milers will be headed around eight times. What a lovely way to spend an autumn day.
Runners start each lap from the Champoeg Pavilion, which will have a covered shelter to keep equipment safe. There are two aid stations on the course that will be stocked with all of the glorious ultramarathon treats: soda, sandwiches, pretzels, chips, chocolate, and beyond. Participants need to bring their own water bottles as the race aims to go cupless.
One last super fun detail for this ultra-race: “Best dressed runners will win one of two cool goodie baskets with food, drink, and toys.” So no matter your speed, you can finish this day off with a shiny new medal and possibly an extra basket of treats.
