Run Oregon Test Kitchen: ReadyWise Adventure / Survival / Emergency Food Kits

It’s officially summertime. My calendar is filled through mid-September with running and backpacking and fastpacking and camping and climbing and all of the summer adventures I can squeeze in. I was stoked to find out about ReadyWise to add to my food rotation for all of these outings!

I am not a creative cook even on my best day, so when it comes to prepping food for weekends away, the easier the better. I love a good chili mac after a day of backpacking and freeze-dried fruits are an incredible on-trail snack. ReadyWise has a wide selection of entrees, breakfasts, and snacks (including vegan and vegetarian options, as well as gluten-free).

Just like any other adventure-ready meal, these are ready to go: just add water (the typical dinner entree calls for ~2 cups; I found slightly less is better). Pastas, soups, curries…they are incredibly easy to make and delicious, high in protein, and as all adventure meals are, a good sodium replacement.

ReadyWise also sells food kits to add to your emergency storage. With up to a 25 year shelf-life, having a few of these packets in your preparedness kit is a must-have.

One of the things I most appreciated about this product is the packaging. While not all of the meals are able to have water poured inside (a pot was needed, which then requires a little bit of post-meal clean up), but on the actual package were jokes and other delightful information. While sitting around a quiet camp, it provided a little bit of entertainment and a few chuckles.

Many of the adventure meals feature the ziplock top so you can throw other garbage in it to pack out of the wilderness or just to be assured there will be no leaking once it’s gone.

I’m looking forward to trying a few more flavors (but also more of that chili mac!) as we march through the summer!
