Race Recap: 2021 Virtual Hop Hop Half by FootTraffic

As in-person races are slowly coming back onto the calendar this spring, I’m looking forward to running with a group again. At the same time I am thankful for race organizers who are offering a virtual run option either alongside or instead of an in-person event. The 2021 Hop Hop Half, 10k, and 5k was scheduled as a blended event with in-person small groups starting at time slots throughout the morning, and a virtual option where you could submit your finish time to Huber Timing via a link provided.

Packet pickup for Foot Traffic’s races is always very convenient, as they schedule 4-8 different times at their different stores, offering weekday and weekend options in different parts of the metro area. I had chosen to run the race virtually, mostly because the in-person event took place on Saturday, April 3rd, and these days I am scheduled to work every Saturday. Instead of joining a group, I took to the trails through the neighborhood during the following week, running Strava on my fitness watch in order to submit an official result to the timing company.

The swag for the race was very fun! In addition to a shirt and personalized bib, it contained a finish line and a champagne flute, orange juice, and sparkling wine for a post-race mimosa. While it doesn’t quite replace the fun of a post race party, I am very glad to keep supporting local events that keep me running when I don’t have in-person events to prepare for.
