Race Preview: 2019 Champions Run For Heroes (McMinnville) – THIS WEEKEND

McMinnville may be a bit off the beaten path, but located about 30 minutes south of Sherwood on 99W, there are a couple fun races in this city. One of the best, benefiting local causes and put on by the nonprofit See Ya Later Foundation, is the Champions Run for Heroes, scheduled for September 14th. With 5K and 10K options along with a half mile kids race, this is a family friendly event. Held at the Evergreen Aviation Museum, it is easy to find and offers a great post race activity.

Online registration is open here until September 13th at 2 pm. Both distances are $35, DOE sign up is an additional $5. The kids run is $5 and there is also an option to have them play in a supervised play area while you race. Fire fighters and law enforcement officers have a discounted cost of $15 for the race. Entry includes an officially measured and chip timed race, event shirt (not guaranteed for DOE registrants), goodie bag and post race snacks. Awards will be given out to the top 3 finishers for each gender as well as the overall masters (over 40) runners.

Packet pickup will be available at the SYL office on 1016 NW Adams St on the 13th from 9 am to 6 pm or at the race after 7 am. Both 5k and 10K start at 8 am, with the kids race following at 8:45.

The course winds around the aviation museum and surrounding vineyards. It is very flat, with no noticeable ascents. There is a short section of well tended gravel. The 10K is two loops of the 5K course. One water station is present, located near the first mile mark. Proceeds benefit the Mcminnville Police Department, Fire Department, Yamhill County Sheriffs Office and the See Ya Later Foundation.

This year marks the fifth occurrence of this race, and I have run it every year. It is always a lot of fun and well organized. It is also great that the proceeds go to local organizations. Events like this are great for the community and a fun way to stay connected with those in the area. For those of you not in the area, there are a few great local breakfast places that would be perfect for post race refueling and visiting the museum after would make it a fun trip for the whole family.
