When I was 3, I had an operation on my kidney. I don’t really remember it, but I carry the scar from that experience on my body and will for the rest of my life. Stretching 10 inches across my lower abdomen, it’s a reminder that I am lucky to have not needed to to on dialysis or wait for a transplant.
To help out those kids that face chronic kidney disease, there’s a chance to race and contribute to their cause. Hosted by Northwest Kidney Kids, the Strut your Kidney on Sunday, September 22 offers a 5k, a 10k, and a 1-mile Family Fun Run. This is the only organization that helps kids with kidney disease, which is important because it’s a lifelong condition, even if they undergo a successful transplant.
Participants are invited to fundraise for this race as well, with prizes for the top fund raising team, the largest team, and for individual fundraising levels starting at $25.
The race is at Sellwood Riverfront Park and all three distances start out by going over the Sellwood Bridge. The 5k and 10k continue up the west side riverfront trail.
