Race Preview: 2019 Homeless 2 Hopeful Superhero Run (Gold Hill)

Running through the streets of Portland, I often come across people who are living outside. Individuals will stand at busy corners with a sign asking for help, or have a blanket out with items for sale. Tents line some of the sidewalks in my neighborhood, or there are the remnants that have been left of those who have been sent elsewhere by the police. During those runs, all I have to offer is a smile, a nod, and an acknowledgement of the human being beside me. I continue onward wishing for some power to make things better for that person.

In learning about this upcoming race, I realized that what I really wish to be is a superhero. And for at least one morning, my running and my wish could overlap. The Homeless 2 Hopeful Superhero Run is an annual event that is expecting over 300 participants this year. Entering its 6th year, this event includes a 1-mile fun run / walk and chip-timed 5K and 10K runs. Everyone is encouraged to dress up as a superhero (even the volunteers and cheering spectators), and everyone can take part in the food trucks, bounce house, and face painting after the races.

The event is a fundraiser for Hearts with a Mission, a faith-based, non-profit providing services for homeless, runaway, and transitional living youth (ages 10-17) in Jackson County. Services through this program include temporary emergency shelter, independent living program, parent education and support, counseling, nutrition, crisis intervention, supplies, computer lab, 24-hour access, and more. Focused on the motto that “Every Child Deserves a Home,” Hearts with a Mission is creating safe spaces for youth to find a stable home with support and guidance.
