Race Preview: 2019 Amani Center Race Against Child Abuse Half Marathon/10k/5k (St. Helens)

Running for a great cause kills two birds with one stone, and the 2019 Amani Center Race Against Child Abuse on Saturday, April 13th will help you do just that. This St. Helens race, now in it’s 11th year, will benefit the Amani Center, which is a non-profit organization that aids families of abuse and neglect throughout Columbia County.

There’s a Half Marathon, a 10k, a 5k, and a 1-Mile Family Walk/Run, so you can decide which option fits you and your family best.  The race begins between Strand Street and the Columbia River in Columbia View Park.  All the distances will take place on asphalt or hard-packed gravel, and the half marathon as well as the 10k will by hilly courses. There are 4 aid stations located along the route with some of the usual provisions and it’s an out-and-back course. The Half Marathon has almost 2,200 feet of total elevation gain and is considered challenging. It’s also promised to be a very scenic race with a beautiful tree-lined climb up Smith Road. Check it out here.  The 10k meanders through downtown St. Helens and into Columbia City and there’s a lovely hill you’ll encounter twice. The course can be reviewed here. The 5k is pretty flat with a few “gentle rollers.” See it here. Lastly, there’s a 1 Mile Family Walk which is meant, as the title suggests, for the whole family to enjoy. Feel free to bring strollers or wagons or whatever you wish to lug the kiddos around through Old Town. Check out the course here.

All participants will get a shirt if they register by March 22nd after which it’s first come first serve. Finisher medals will also be awarded and all participants will get a cup of stew post-race. Top male and female finishers win receive medals, and there will be age category winners as well. Children 13 and under will get participation ribbons. Race chips will be disposable, so you will not need to return it after the race.

Prices increase after March 22nd and as mentioned above, shirts won’t be guaranteed after this either, so register soon!!
