Race Preview: 2018 Halloweenathon (Aloha)

It’s mid-October. Do you know what you’ll be doing on Saturday morning of the weekend before Halloween? It’ll be too early to go trick-or-treating, except if you want to combine dressing in costume with running – and get some treats along the way – you might consider the annual Halloweenathon.

This is Uberthons’ big Halloween bash thrown at The Reserve Vineyards and Golf Club in Aloha, with the race taking place on the paths of the South golf course. That means it’s a paved, gently winding route with a few rolling hills. The path should be dry, unless it rains a lot, in which case, water can sometimes pool in spots – but those are usually marked with hazard cones.

There are four different ways you can run this race. At 8 am, there are the traditional 5K and 10K distances (once through for the 5K, twice for the 10K). At 10 am, there is an untimed 5K fun run/walk or an untimed 2.5K fun run/walk, both with fun station obstacles along the way. Oh, actually, there are five ways to run it, because at 11 am, there is a kids’ Trick or Treat run.

When you’re done running, you can enjoy the nachos bar (free with race registration, or purchase entry for non-racers), watch the costume contest, and see the awards presentations. For the traditional 5K and 10K, there will be winners’ medals (overall, Masters, and senior), plus age group winner pins; and every finisher gets the finisher’s medal. For the 10 am fun run/walk, all finishers get finisher’s ribbons for the discounted price – or finisher’s medal for the regular price.

This is one of my favorite races of the year, and even though I am not much of a costumed runner, I have been known to show up for this one having borrowed my son’s Darth Vader mask….
