Here are previews of a couple of 4th of July runs taking place across Oregon:
Just southeast of Salem is the Stayton Fun Run. This is a chip-timed run with multiple distance options: 3K, 5K, and 10K. The 5K and 10K races are both labeled as “trail runs” because they incorporate the local middle school trail for about 3 kilometers.
There are a number of appealing aspects about this race. First, the entry fee is just $10 if you register by June 26; after that, it’s still only $15. Second, for an additional $7, you can buy entry to a post-race breakfast with pancakes, sausage, eggs, juice, and coffee. (Proceeds from the breakfast benefit the Stayton High School class of 2019.)
Stayton Fun Run
When: July 4, 2018, at 9 a.m.
Where: Stayton Community Center, 500 W Burnett Street, Stayton, Oregon
Register: Online here ($10 for 3K, 5K, or 10K)
The Tilikum Trail Run is located at Camp Tilikum in Newberg (halfway between Tigard and McMinnville) and is a pure 5K trail run. The entire race course goes around Lake Tilikum three times and looks (from the Google Map satellite view) like a beautiful route. If I weren’t already committed to a different race that morning, I would be super-tempted to run this one.
This race raises funds for scholarships to Camp Tilikum. Early registration, which ends on June 13, costs $35 and includes a race shirt. After that, the standard entry fee is $45, and no shirt is guaranteed. Besides the race, entry fee includes an invitation to hang out at the Camp and to enjoy various activities. There is post-race BBQ available for $5.
When: July 4, at 10 am.
Where: Camp Tilikum, 15321 NE North Valley Road, Newberg, Oregon
Register: Online here ($35 until June 14; after that, $45)
