If you’ve never run one of the Gorgeous Relay races, you really should. I discovered the series last year and they have been some of my favorite races ever. They are thoughtfully planned, well executed, and truly as gorgeous as the name implies. Luckily, you have a chance to experience one for yourself soon, with the 2018 Gorgeous Hood To Hood Relay coming up on Sunday, June 10th.
This 1 day, 54 mile relay will start in waves from 7:00AM on, and there are 12 legs on this journey. Your team can have up to 6 runners, and if you’re feeling really brave, you could even tackle the whole course solo. Each team must supply 1 volunteer for race day, so find a friend to help out or sponsor one for a $100 donation to Mazamas. Read more about volunteers here.
The race will start at Timberline Lodge, which is no doubt a great beginning to any day. From there, your relay team will travel around Mt Hood and up to the Cooper Spur Resort before heading down through the orchards of the Fruit Loop with views of Mt. Adams. Eventually, you’ll run down the Historic Old Columbia River Highway and finish in Hood River at Waterfront Park on the Columbia River. Check out the course maps and start planning out your team assignments.
Teams must average an 11:00 minute per mile pace and all participants must fill out the waiver, submit their estimated 10k time, and have the volunteer information complete. Teams must provide their own vans (no motor homes or vehicles longer than 20 feet) and only 1 van will be allowed per team. If you’re looking for some additional guidance on relay running, check out the helpful How to Relay page.
Every team member will get a Gorgeous t-shirt, a finisher’s medal, and a pint glass and free beer at the finish line in Hood River. It’s going to be a great celebration after an amazing day with friends.
The deadline for team and volunteer information (as well as the guarantee on t-shirt size) is May 20th, so you’d better get on it! You won’t regret this epic adventure!
