Hump Day Happy Hour Ciders of the Week: Anthem Hops, Pear, and Honeycrisp


I love beer. After now having visited over 390 different breweries, it’s fair to say I have sampled a lot of beer (follow me on Untappd). From post-race pints and run club meeting locations, to beer miles and relays, running and the kegged nectar seem to go hand-in-hand in Oregon. Earlier this year, we reviewed some ciders from Anthem Cider, based out of Salem. They sent us a couple of their core ciders and we are now reviewing a couple more bottles from this line – Hops and Pear, as well as a canned limited release – Honeycrisp. Here’s a snippet about Anthem from our previous feature:

Anthem is actually half of the company’s moniker, alongside Wandering Aengus Ciderworks. Both are ran and made by the same people (and made in the same location), but Anthem features more “modern” cider options (tending to be more on the sweeter side with “dessert apples”), while Wandering Aengus serves up drier variants with cider apples.

If you want to complete the Salem Ale Trail passport book (or even if you just want to sample some great cider), this is one you have to do some planning for. Anthem’s tasting room is only open for extremely limited hours (CLOSED UNTIL MEMORIAL DAY, but then open 4-8pm on Fridays only), but it is well worth the trip. It’s super small, but they have always had different and delicious small-batch ciders on tap when I’ve been there.

For someone who mostly considers himself a “hop-head” when it comes to beers, I am late to the hopped-cider game. Anthem Hops is dry hopped with organic Cascade hops and almost tastes pale-aley. I found that this cider was on the dryer side – almost like a wine – with a more natural apple taste than new-age ciders. Even with the hops, I didn’t find it super bitter – just a mild hop flavoring with a tinge of earthy tones as well. It’s unique and I didn’t mind it. It’s not “crushable”, but a good dry cider that really does well when thought of us a wine.

The Anthem Pear is one of my favorite ciders out there. The fresh pressed Barlett, Bosc and D’Anjou pears from Hood River are noticeable but not overpowering, as many other pear ciders can be. It is so ridiculously smooth and has no harshness on the palate (credit the pears on that one). This one is super crushable and absolutely “pear-fect” for a warm summer day or after a run (sorry about that pun).

I first tasted their limited edition Honeycrisp cider on tap in their taproom. As a honeycrisp apple enthusiast, this was, and is, right up my alley. It’s a bit sweet and super crisp and is fermented with Belgian Wit Yeast and Finished with Newtown Pippin Juice & Coriander. I think this is a cider that is just begging to be paired with other juices for a refreshing mixture. I personally love splashing a little cranberry juice in it for great summer option.

You can find Anthem Cider all over the country, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to pick up a bottle or two nearby wherever you are now.
