Race Preview: 2018 Roseburg to Coos Bay Relay

Looking for a really fun relay this spring? The 42nd year of South Coast Running Club’s popular Roseburg to Coos Bay Relay is coming up on April 21st and there is both a running and a walking option. This race is also a fund-raiser for Camp Millennium, which is a summer camp for children with cancer.

The 67 mile running relay begins it’s staggered start times at 6:00AM at KPIC-TV in Roseburg. Competitive teams of 5 or fewer members will run a total of 15 relay legs that are 3-6 miles each. There will be some steep hills along the course, but most of the route will be paved with a few gravel stretches. Legs 1 and 5 are recommended for the strongest runners, with legs 2 and 4 being good candidates for your next strongest. Leg 3 is mostly downhill. The course map and additional information can be found here.

The 23 mile walk relay begins at Laverne Park in Coquille, which is located on the Scenic North Fork of the Coquille River, where participants will join the runners along the river to Fairview. Competitive teams will be made up of 4 or less walkers and there are 8 legs varying between 2.5 and 3.5 miles each. You can view the course information here.

Teams will have maps and are responsible for their runners out on the course. Teams must use their runners/walkers alternately in the same sequence, and if someone must drop out, they cannot run or walk again later in the relay. Only one vehicle will be allowed per team and no RV’s are allowed on the course.

There will be no traffic control provided on the course and runners should follow the rules of the road. Local gas stations and parks along the course will give participants access to restrooms and there will be some trees and bushes made available in some spots as well. Exchange points will be staked and flagged.

This relay ends in the Fred Meyer parking lot in Coos Bay and there will be an awards ceremony around 4:45PM at Abby’s Pizza.
