Race Preview: 2018 Hop Hop Half (Portland)

Sometimes it feels like the winter weather will be around forever, but the daffodils are already blooming and are promising that spring is just around the corner. Along with it we can look forward to some beautiful weather and fun spring races. As the only Easter themed race that I’m aware of in the area, Foot Traffic’s Hop Hop Half takes place on Saturday, March 31, the day before Easter Sunday. As in past years, the half marathon starts first at 8am, the new 10k distance is tentatively scheduled to start at the same time, and the 5k will start at 9am. Sign up by March 4th to guarantee your shirt size!

The course is flat and beautiful, and it is perfect for seasoned runners chasing a new PR as well as beginners and walkers. The half marathon course will be closed to traffic for 3.5 hrs (16 min/mile), but since the second half of the half marathon course is on a biking/walking path, the finish line and aid stations will be kept open for 4 hrs (19 min/mile).
While the final 5k and 10k course maps are still in the works, the plan is that the 5k takes you out and back to the south; the 10k starts the same way to the south, then instead of finishing it passes by the start line at the 3.1 mile mark, runs towards the north and eastward on the biking path along the Columbia River, before turning around to head back to the finish again. The half marathon course is USATF certified. It starts the same as the 10k, but with a longer out-and-back along the Columbia all the way to the I-205 overpass. All finishers receive a finisher’s medal.

After the race, enjoy a brunch menu including cinnamon rolls, fruit, scrambled eggs and croissants; mimosas or orange juice in a commemorative champagne flute (to keep!), and craft beer; costume contest and egg painting contest, and more!
