Race Preview: The 2018 Roaring Runs at Roaring River (Scio)

On Saturday, February 3, 2018, the Roaring Run Half Marathon, 10k and 5k events will hit the quiet streets in beautiful, quiet, rural Scio at the Roaring River County Park – about 20 miles easy of Albany. This is a walker friendly half marathon, with an early start for half marathon participants who need some extra time occurring at 8:30 a.m. Your regular half marathon start time is 9 a.m. If you choose to participate in the 10k, your race will begin at 9:30 a.m., and the 5k will hit the street at 10 a.m.

Two very awesome things the event offers are a very reasonable entry fee into any of the three race distances. Also, they have historically done  a really neat game taking place on the half marathon course, coined the “Mile Marker Music Game”. How it works is, at each mile marker on the half marathon course, there will be music playing. Listen closely to the music, and remember it from mile marker to mile marker. There will be a theme, or connection, between each piece of music playing at each mile marker. At the finish line, you can guess what the theme or connection was, and be entered into a drawing. Pretty cool, and really unique.

As for the reasonable entry fees, check these out. The half marathon entry is $40, the 10k is $30 and the 5k is $25 (all prices go up $5  on 12/31/17). Your entry fee includes a finisher medal for half marathon participants and a baked potato bar and other post-race snacks to get your re-fueled and ready for the Super Bowl. Youth pricing, for participants up to 16 years old, is $10 for any event distance.

The half marathon course is USATF certified and the course is held on quiet, rural roads. I ran this a few years ago andcan attest that  scenery along the course is absolutely spectacular. The 10k and 5k are out-and-backs that also follow low-traffic rural roads and will take your through beautiful, country settings.

As parking in limited at Roaring River County Park, please be advised there is a shuttle service for racers that leaves from Lacomb School. The shuttle will take races from Lacomb School to the park on a 15 minute schedule, beginning at 8 a.m. and ending at 9:30 a.m. Then, after the race, the shuttle will take participants back to the Lacomb School on a 15 minute schedule beginning at 11 a.m. and ending at 12:30 p.m. You will have a nice secure bag that will keep your items dry if taking the shuttle.

If you are looking for something a little quiet before the chaos of the Super Bowl takes hold, check this event out.
