Do the Hustle – the 2017 High Street Hustle 8k/5k (Salem)

The third annual High Street Hustle is hitting the Salem streets once again on August 12, 2017. This event has only expanded and gotten better with each year (1300 last year – by far the largest in the city), which makes this Salem-ite happy and proud. The event is the brainchild of the owners of Gallagher Fitness, Salem’s fantastic running store and go-to for all things running in the Capitol City.

The race features an 8k and a 5k that begin a stone’s throw from the Capitol building. The out-and-back course runs down some closed off downtown city streets (no small feat in Salem – in fact I believe it’s currently the only race here that is allowed to do that), and climbs up High Street alongside Bush Park (the collegiate training grounds of Nick Symmonds). Check out the 8k and 5k course maps for more details. Expect a significant, yet quick climb up and down about a half mile in (and subsequently a half mile to go), followed by pretty steady climb beginning right near the 1 mile mark.

Finishers will be treated to a cotton/poly lifestyle blend shirt (my favorite), post-race beer (from Santiam brewing) or cider (from Anthem Cider), food from a variety of local vendors, and discounts on New Balance gear. Runners are encouraged to don their best 70’s get-ups (in the inaugural year, I remember a guy ran the whole thing shirtless, in bell bottoms, with an afro AND carrying a real, music-playing boombox the entire time).

Packets can be picked up at Gallagher Fitness Resources (135 Commercial St NE) on Thursday, August 10 (10am-7pm) and Friday, August 11 ( 10am-7pm). There will be free parking in the Capitol Mall Parking Structure (an underground garage at 900 Chemeketa Street NE).

Annette ran this race last year and had this to say:

If Salem’s High Street Hustle isn’t on your radar yet, let me strongly suggest that you add this one to your race bucket list. This 2nd year event was truly amazing!

To add to the uniqueness of this race, the entire race course was closed to traffic even though it was on major streets in downtown Salem. A traffic-free road race? Now that was a treat!

I grabbed some water and walked around the finish area to cool down. Racers were enjoying free plates of post-race food and/or a free beer or cider. There were also bananas and bars to refuel with. There was still a kids race on the docket and the festivities looked like they would continue for some time[…] I opened my sunroof and cranked my music as I drove home, still feeling the enthusiasm of the cowbells of the High Street Hustle. I will definitely be back again! This is a must-do race. Runners, get it on your list for next year!
