There are certain events throughout Oregon that need nothing more than an acronym. The Pole, Pedal, Paddle is one of those events, known affectionately as the PPP. For 42 years, Bend has hosted this unique event that is unlike nearly anything else out there when it comes to multi-event races. How unique you ask?
The U.S. Bank Pole, Pedal, Paddle is a relay race with six legs that include:
- Alpine skiing/snowboarding,
- Cross-country skiing,
- Canoeing/kayaking/stand up paddle boarding, and
- Sprinting to the finish!
You can do it all yourself or be part of a team (or pair). Hardcore participants commonly do this solo, but I had the pleasure of doing this as a team event several years ago and it was a blast!
How big of an event is it? Over 2,000 racers will take part in the PPP with another 1,300 kids joining in to race the Kid’s PPP, which has become so big that it has its own website and registration page!!
Teams are encouraged to dress up or wear outfits that match, which often results in some fairly comical attire. The entire event ends with a massive festival at the Les Schwab Amphitheater, which sets alongside the Deschutes River and across from the Old Mill in Bend. Even if you aren’t competing, this is a fun event to be at because it takes up nearly the entire day, making the amphitheater the place to be!
When: Saturday, May 20th. Racers take off in waves, starting at 9am.
