Race Recap: 2017 Spring Go Race Series, Race #1

The Spring Go Race Series has begun! If you don’t know what I’m talking about, Go Beyond Racing is hosting a series of timed 5k races every Wednesday night in April at 6:30PM at either Tualatin Community Park or Cook Park. Read my preview here to learn what it’s all about.

The first race in the series was on April 5th at Tualatin Community Park. This was a super convenient location for me, other than some after-work commute traffic which is hard to avoid anywhere. I made sure I gave myself a bit of extra time to get there because Google Maps told me that parking could be challenging at this location. I did have a little trouble finding a vacant parking spot during my first lap around the parking lot, but I wasn’t sure where exactly I was supposed to be going. Once I parked, I wasn’t totally sure where I needed to be, but it’s not a huge park, so it was pretty easy to find the starting line and a huge chute near the volunteers at tables who were ready to hand out racing bibs. I easily got my number and the volunteers and race organizers were super friendly and helpful.

The route, which was posted before the race on the Go Race Series Facebook Page and on the website, was simple and easy to follow. It was very well marked and it would have been hard to lose your way, which is saying something because I get lost pretty easily. The time went by quickly, and the route was all on a paved trail around Tualatin Community Park and Cook Park. There were a few hilly spots but nothing too ugly. Before I knew it, I heard the cowbell cheering me through the finish and they were nice enough to congratulate me by name when I was done. My racing results were immediately sent to me via text courtesy of Huber Timing which was convenient. There was also access to results on a computer there by the starting line. There were some other race perks as well. Cornerstone Chiropractic was there to offer massages and the company On was there with shoes to test if you were into that. The awards will come after the last race on April 26th when they average everyone’s best three out of four races to pick the overall winners.

I know a lot of people are looking for a good excuse to get out for a run at least one evening a week, especially as the weather is improving and the beautiful trees are blooming. This is the PERFECT excuse for just that! Even though you’ve missed the first race, you can always show up any Wednesday night in April between 5:45 and 6:00PM to do any of the three upcoming races for a drop in fee of $20. Also, just a friendly reminder that there will be some raffles and prizes up for grabs after the last race of the series. A quick, well- organized race with a route all planned out for you, surrounding yourself with other runners to encourage you, and the potential to walk away with some awesome gear? Who’s in? See you next Wednesday, April 12th!
