Race Preview: 2016 Heel to Heal Run (Astoria)

Heel to HealThis year will be the third one in which the Healing Circle has organized the Heel to Heal Run on Astoria’s Riverwalk. What is the Healing Circle? It’s “a community based organization dedicated to the healing of childhood sexual violence.  The Healing Circle was created to serve children in Clatsop County who are the survivors of sexual abuse.”

One of the Healing Circle’s programs are the Victory Over Child Abuse (VOCA) Camps:

Each year 80-100 volunteers gather to create two camps; a camp for boys and one for girls.

VOCA Camps are a magical haven for children.  Like traditional summer camp, VOCA Camp provides the same opportunities for fun; fishing, swimming, arts and crafts, campfires, and songs.  At VOCA Camp however, there is always an element of healing included in all activities. The songs are of empowerment, the campfires are times of talking, and the art is about the process of creating.

The Heel to Heal Run is a fundraising race to help support the VOCA Camps. It will take place on Saturday, September 24, 2016. There aren’t many details about the race available, but there are 5K and 10K options, and the starting point is the Astoria Riverwalk at the 6th Street entrance.
