Impressions:

I was a little skeptical when I heard I had a chance to try out some Go Gourmet Slammers smoothie pouches. Organic ingredients? No added sugar? No artificial ingredients? Beets? Sweet Potato? Purple carrot? It made me think of that line from Seinfeld: “What am I drinking, milk?!” OK, I’m joking. But still, I expected the nutritious character to overshadow the refreshment factor.

I shouldn’t have worried, because these things are delicious! They have a rich texture, and the unique blend of ingredients makes them stand out from other drinks I have tried. I got to test three flavors: Pomegranate Grape Crush (a mixture of grape, pomegranate, coconut, apple, banana, and purple carrot), Watermelon Kiwi Burst (strawberry, kiwi, watermelon, apple, banana and beet), and Creamy Banana Chocolate (banana, coconut cream, grape, sweet potato and cocoa powder). All three flavors contain 7 grams of protein per pouch.

Each flavor was great in its own individual way, and I found myself rotating through them in order so I wouldn’t run out of one flavor before the others. The only problem was that the pouches are very small (3.5 oz). I emptied them quickly and was left wanting more. I treated the Slammers as a quick refreshing snack, but they would probably work very well on long races or training runs as a tasty alternative to energy bars or gels.
