Ever been intrigued by a triathlon ... except for the swimming part? Personally, I'd love to replace the swimming part with rowing (given my affection for the Concept2 erg), but the Willamette River Relay offers an interesting substitution - paddling, or any other kind of human powered water transportation craft, instead of swimming. (You do have to supply your own water vehicle, so a Concept2 wouldn't be very useful at all in this race.) It's going to take place on August 13 in Albany.
This event is designated a relay, so it can be done in the usual way with teammates switching off on different events, or it can be tackled individually. In fact, the race organizers are so flexible that you can race as a team of 2, 3, or 4 - up to 2 people can complete the paddle portion together. There's a short course and a long course available. The short course is a 2.4 mile paddle, a 15.2 mile bike ride, and a 5K run. The long course is an 11.5 mile paddle, a 30 mile bike ride, and a 10K run. For more details on the courses, click here. Proceeds from the race benefit local river restoration efforts.
Registration includes finisher's medal and free entry to the after-race party with food!
