Race Preview: 2016 Freedomthon 5K

Uberthons has been staging the Freedomthon, a Fourth of July race, for several years now, and the past two have included a pancake and sausage breakfast. I've run the Freedomthon two years in a row, and it is a fast course. It's about as flat as Kansas, and it's basically a straight mile, 90 degree right turn, straight half mile, turnaround, straight half mile, 90 degree left turn, and straight mile:

Okay, it looks like there’s a bend in there, but it’s not really noticeable when you’re running hard. On your way back, in the home stretch, there will be volunteers handing out small U.S. flags that you can carry as you kick toward the finish.

Because it’s early in the morning on a holiday, the roads are blocked off by Beaverton Police. There should be even more activities this year, including a dunk tank, fire trucks, and inflatable bounce houses.

With an 8:30 a.m. start, it should hopefully be not too hot at race time – but there’s always that dunk tank to cool you off afterward.
