Race Preview: 2016 Skin Cancer Awareness 5k

If there was ever a race that hits close to home, it just may be the 2016 Skin Cancer Awareness 5k, coming up this May at Sellwood Park. My dad was diagnosed with Melanoma a few years back and it has gone in and out of remission since that time, interspersed with few rounds of radiation, immunotherapy and surgeries. He is lucky to still be here with us and we continue to fight the fight together.

But, sadly,  it really took this to happen for me to really even consider the importance of covering up, using sunscreen, and being generally aware of how to care for your skin. It really shouldn’t have taken a family member to get cancer to realize this, but it did. So a race with this as its primary message is one that I think is vitally important.

Race course

The race is low-key and will be an out and back along the Springwater Trail (starting at the park and heading north before returning to the start).

This will be an out and back 5K Walk/Run along the “Springwater On the Willamette” pathway. For those of us who have been here, expect paved paths and a flat course.

Net proceeds will be donated to The Skin Cancer Foundation. Follow the event on Facebook here too.
