The holidays provide a bounty of races in the Portland area, and one of the most festive events is the Holiday Half and 5K presented by Foot Traffic. Getting away from the familiar downtown courses, the Holiday 5K and Half Marathon take place on the bluff near the adidas campus in North Portland. Runners should be presented with great views of the city, providing a white-out blizzard doesn’t sweep in. Realistically, the only snow will likely be coming from the artificial snow machine at the finish celebration (I hope I didn’t just jinx it!)
The Holiday 5K course begins at the pedestrian bridge at the adidas campus, takes a short uphill for a couple blocks (just enough to keep you from going out too fast), and then winds its way through quiet residential streets. The final half of the course is a flat out-and-back along the bluff, where you can give and receive encouragement from your fellow runners. Last year there was a bit of a headwind, but not enough to slow you down significantly. The last quarter mile or so is a fast return trip down the hill you started up, giving you a chance for a nice final kick.
It can be cold, so dress accordingly. Costumes are encouraged. Parking is at a premium in the surrounding neighborhoods, so plan on taking advantage of the convenient shuttle buses from Swan Island.
Entry fees increase on October 15th, and make sure to register by November 1st to get your name on your bib.
This year 5K finishers will receive a finisher’s medal exclusive to their race. Sign up by November 10th to receive a long-sleeved tech shirt.
Finishers can warm up and refuel at the adidas courtyard and gym, listen to music and visit a variety of vendors’ booths. There are no official race awards, but results will be posted, and random raffle prizes will be announced.
