Race Preview – COPA Family 5K Run/Walk – Bend, OR

As part of a larger weekend involving what is known as the Tour Des Chutes, the COPA 5K is a benefit run that supports cancer care and survivorship for children and adults in Central Oregon. The run takes place in the ever popular Northwest Crossing neighborhood and the course was designed by Bend Foot Zone‘s own Dave Thomason (aka, Super Dave).

The COPA 5K is in its 2nd year and was the inspiration of Bend runner Johanna Olson, who died of cancer in 2013 at age 34. Johanna created the event specifically to raise money to support children with cancer.

The run is put on by Central Oregon Pediatric Associates (COPA) and The Kralj Family, with all proceeds directly benefiting Pediatric Foundation, a Central Oregon non-profit that provides financial support to families who have a child with cancer who must travel out of the area to receive treatments.

The race is very much a family event and everyone is encouraged to come out with strollers, babies, small children, extended family, you name it…although they do stress leaving your dog at home. Based on the pictures from last year’s event, found on their Facebook page, kids were indeed the focus and for good reason!
