Race Preview: 5k on the Runway in Eugene

5k on the Runway Logo

Break out the aviators and get ready to race under a sky streaked with contrails at the 5k on the Runway.  For the 3rd time this August, the Eugene Airport and the Eugene Active 20-30 Club are bringing you the unique opportunity to race on the airport runway for a good cause.

Whether you rely on humming “Danger Zone” to yourself to get through the miles, or you come up with witty Top Gun-themed race nicknames, this 5k will surely have a lot to offer adults and kids alike.

My first thoughts about this race, I confess, were immediately that the course almost has to be flat, which is a really great way to endear a race close to my, and probably many a runner’s, heart.  Lending excitement to an already intriguing, and quintessentially summer, ambiance, the air show is scheduled to run from 8am to 1pm, so if you’ve ever wanted to get your tower buzzed while in your running shoes, this is your chance.

With jets overhead to keep you company on the tarmac, the real challenge will likely be keeping your eyes on the course.  Add to it that the mission of the Eugene Active 20-30 club is to help improve the quality of life for both young adults and kids with special needs, you’ve got yourself a pretty compelling reason to check it out, and feel good about that race fee.

Along with a race shirt and runway running bragging rights, you’ll get the chance to spend the morning watching the air show, enjoy live music and entertainment, and give the kids – and yourself – what promises to be a memorable day at the airport.
