With the wild winter in The Dalles causing the cancellation of the Valentine’s Day race in February, folks throughout the Gorge were itching to get out and hit the trail. All participants were treated to the finest day of the year with 70 degrees and a splendid day of competition. This race was the final of three Jumpstart Winter Trail events to keep people moving.
With a clear trail and sunny spring sky, all runners and walkers took off with the passion of Rory O’Holloran, (who was the official bagpiper for the morning).
The funds raised in this event will go towards two organizations: Colonel Wright Elementary physical education and Jumpstart Summer Basketball Camp held in Dufur, Oregon.
The 5k and 10k course looped past Devco Mechanical (one of two Jumpstart event sponsors) staying with the river a majority of the distance. Local favorite Erin Ford was the first female 10K finisher in a time of 41:41 while 2nd and 3rd place awards went to Leanne Neal with a finish time of 45:54 and Sophie Whitehead with a finish time of 47:35. In the men’s race, Clint Bogard finished first in 43.18 with Dave Heineck taking 2nd with a time of 43.57, and Allen Dushan finishing 3rd with a time of 44:24.
In the 5k race Rick George circled the course in 21:55 to take the gold while Declan Liddiard earned 2nd with his time of 22.52. Kevin Liddiard crossed the line in 23.06 to earn 3rd. In the female division, Ronda Strong won in 26:27, followed by Ashley Howe in 27:30 and Cameo Semaia running 27:33 for third place.
In the 3k race, a slew of elementary runners showed up to test their skills for the podium with 6th grader, Slyvan Linker, coming in first in a time of 12.32 and 7th grader Justin Conklin taking 2nd in 14:32. Colonel Wright Elementary 4th grader Osvaldo Munoz earned the bronze with a time of 15:37. For the female 3k division, 3rd grader Giselle Oretga ran 21:05 for first, while 2nd grader Allyson Awmiller took 2nd with 21:10 and her kindergarten sister, Brooke Awmiller earned the bronze with a time of 21:14.
Jumpstart events have no charge to participate and are open to any K-5 youth. Programs throughout the year include elementary cross country races, track meets, winter trail runs, and a full week basketball camp which runs during the third week in June in Dufur, Oregon, from 9a-3p each day. The funds raised through these winter trail events coupled with the sponsorships from Devco Mecanical and Casa El Mirador allow many events to be paid for during the year. Jumpstart Basketball camp is a fundamental camp that focuses on all aspects of skill development taught by seasoned coaches, who themselves are current/former coaches and/or players. This camp is limited to 150 boys and girls grades 2-9th. For more information go to: Jumpstartcamps.com—Jumpstart Camp Activities.
