On Sunday, April 13, 2014 at the Oregon Convention Center racers will line up to compete in the Race for the Roses 5k, 10k, and 1/2 Marathon distances that is just as much about sport as it is about cause and passion. Race for the Roses is in benefit of Albertina Kerr, a non-profit organization that has been a staple of Portland since the early 1900s – bringing services to the community to support those with developmental disabilities and mental health challenges. 100% of the proceeds from this race go to support this amazing organization and you can have an amazing time taking in the sights of the Portland landscape in the process – win/win.
The Race for the Roses course takes you across the Broadway and Steel Bridge and takes you through most of Northwest Portland and downtown, running along the waterfront for a great deal of the race. Looks like a pretty flat and fast course that is PR-worthy. With the benefit of running in the heart of Portland comes the drawback of having to cross Max and train lines. From when I ran the 10k last year, this seemed to be a nuisance, but the race organizers were on top of it and besides trying to work with city officials to avoid stops, they provided timing mats by every potential stop. This is a race that takes ease and comfort to the next level in understanding where they are located. Personally, I don’t find stops annoying, but that’s probably because I am lazy and enjoy the “break”.
For your registration and completion of the race, you will get an awesome shirt with the graphic below, a free finishers photo download, a fresh cut rose, and a MIMOSA. You guys, mimosas! They offer medals for additional cost in order to keep race costs down, which I appreciate.
This year, their expo and packet pickup will be on Saturday, April 12 at the Oregon Convention Center from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Fit Right NW will also be there operating their awesome booth. Love stopping by with them to get Gu and Nuun, my two favorites.
