For More Than Just Miles: Casual Options from Merrell

As runners, we spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about shoes. On this site alone, there’s an entire section dedicated to them, and across the internet there are endless websites, YouTube channels, and social accounts focused solely on running footwear. Most of us probably have a rotation sitting in our closets—daily trainers, speed shoes, trail shoes, maybe even a few more specialized options. Shoes matter.

But unless your job is being a professional runner, most of us are logging an hour a day, maybe a bit more, in those shoes. The rest of the time, we’re in something else. And if that “something else” isn’t comfortable and functional, it doesn’t take long before it starts affecting how your feet feel when it’s time to run again.

It’s always interesting when a running-focused brand branches into casual footwear. There’s an assumption—maybe a fair one—that their understanding of comfort and performance will carry over. Merrell, with some of their newer casual offerings, is making a strong case for that. We recently checked out a few pairs.

Relay Web 1TRL

Everybody needs a go-to, everyday shoe. Sure, there are a handful of running shoes that can cross over into casual wear, but it’s pretty limited. And while no one should feel embarrassed about it, pairing race-day super shoes with jeans is probably overkill. Comfortable, yes—but not exactly necessary. There’s something to be said for a more understated, everyday option.

The Relay Web 1TRL leans into that space. It brings some “running” DNA—EVA footbed, rubber outsole, and a lightweight feel around 8.8 ounces—but packages it in a more elevated design. The full-grain leather upper and unique lacing system give it a look that can easily pair with jeans without feeling out of place.

It’s not a wedding shoe or something for a formal meeting (depending on your line of work), but it fits well into those everyday situations where you want something that looks a little more put together without sacrificing comfort. It’s a daily option that feels good, looks good, and uses quality materials.

Moab 2 Slide Leather Woven 1TRL

As someone who works from home, I don’t spend a ton of time in business casual footwear. Because of that, I don’t have a deep bench of options—and when something comes up that requires it, I’m usually reminded pretty quickly that what I do have isn’t all that comfortable.

That’s where the Moab 2 Slide Leather Woven 1TRL comes in. It leans more into that business casual lane while still holding onto some of that running-inspired comfort. There’s an EVA foam footbed, Merrell’s air cushion in the heel for shock absorption, and a Vibram outsole for grip (not that you’ll be cornering at speed).

The full-grain leather upper and easy slip-on design make it practical, and despite the open heel, it can look more polished than expected—especially with the right socks.

Jungle Trek Moc

And if you’re looking for something a little more relaxed and fun, the Jungle Trek Moc is worth a look.

This is an updated take on the classic Jungle Moc, a model that already has a reputation for comfort. That holds true here, thanks to a FloatMax foam midsole and FlexConnect grooves that help keep you connected to the ground. The redesign streamlines the look a bit, giving it a more modern feel, and the color options are a step up stylistically.

It’s laceless, easy to throw on, and holds the foot well—making it a strong everyday option that blends comfort and style in a simple package.

At the end of the day, most of us would rather spend our money on running gear. That’s the priority. But if your everyday footwear could use an upgrade, these are worth checking out.
