Run Oregon Test Kitchen: 1stPhorm’s Level-1 Natural Protein

Health products have always felt a bit like a double-edged sword to me. On one hand, I’m constantly looking for ways to stay active, recover better, and keep myself moving. On the other, there’s no shortage of products out there making big promises that may—or may not—actually deliver.

Now that I’m almost two years past 40, I’ve started paying closer attention to what truly helps. I may have been lighter, faster, or carried more raw energy in years past, but right now I feel the most balanced and well-rounded in my fitness that I ever have—and I really like that.

That’s what led me to start highlighting a handful of health companies and products here at Run Oregon. It’s not a category we cover all that often, and I’m not here to break down the science behind every ingredient—that part is easy enough to research on your own. What I can do is share products I’ve actually tried and found worth noting.

The next stop in this series: 1stPhorm.

I don’t always find myself going all-in on every health or supplement product that crosses my path, but protein powder is usually where I’m most willing to start. 1stPhorm’s Level-1 Natural is a whey-based protein powder, and while we all know the general benefits of protein for an active lifestyle—muscle growth, repair, and recovery—it does sometimes feel like society has gone a little overboard (not every food needs to be protein-packed, right?). That said, powdered protein still hits a nice sweet spot for me.

Level-1 Natural is designed to deliver nutrients in a more sustained release format. I’ll be upfront: I don’t fully understand or pretend to validate the science behind that claim. What 1stPhorm points to is their use of low-temperature processed protein, which is meant to keep protein fractions intact and potentially slow digestion and absorption. Whether you dive into that or not is up to you—but it’s part of the product’s overall approach.

From a nutritional standpoint, each serving delivers 23+ grams of protein, along with 5 grams of BCAAs and glutamine, and notably, no artificial sweeteners—a big plus for those trying to keep ingredient lists a bit cleaner.

I tested the Chocolate flavor, which is always my safe starting point. I typically mix protein with oat milk and sometimes add fruit, so I tried it both ways—straight and dressed up a bit—and came away impressed. The flavor was pleasant, the texture relatively smooth, not overly sweet, and easy to drink even without extras.

There are also 12 flavors total, ranging from classics like Strawberry Milkshake and Vanilla Ice Cream to more playful options such as Blueberry Muffin, Iced Oatmeal Cookie, and Maple Butter Waffle. It’s a lineup that offers plenty of variety.

At $59.99, Level-1 Natural isn’t the cheapest protein powder on the shelf, but it feels thoughtfully put together, tastes good, and fits nicely into a balanced, active routine. If you’re looking for a straightforward protein option from a company that clearly puts intention into its products, this is one worth considering.
