I’m pretty finicky when it comes to energy bars. I get tired of most of them pretty quickly — even ones I liked at first. Over time, I’ve tried plenty, but only a handful make it into regular rotation. Most fall short somewhere along the way — maybe the texture’s off, the flavor’s bland, or they just feel like a chore to finish.
I know some people swear by homemade bars (and honestly, that’s awesome — I even snagged some incredible handmade options at halfway point of the Maunawili Marathon this past summer). But I’m not exactly blessed with a chef’s touch, which is why Shark Bars caught my attention.
The brand started with a swimmer who was fueling up on a simple mix of peanut butter oatmeal topped with fruit, nuts, and a drizzle of honey. It wasn’t anything revolutionary — but it worked. The balance of protein, carbs, fat, and fiber hit all the right notes. From there, he started baking bars weekly, sharing them with friends and fellow swimmers. Word spread, and soon enough, Shark Bars were ready for a wider audience.
They come in two flavors:
The packaging is refreshingly minimal — no flashy designs or marketing gimmicks — and I kind of love that. So many bars spend more energy on the wrapper than the recipe, but Shark Bars keep it simple, focusing on what’s inside. It does look like there will be some new packaging in the near future as well.
And the inside is worth celebrating. The ingredient list reads like something from an actual kitchen: whole-grain oats, raw unfiltered honey, natural peanut butter, roasted almonds and sunflower seeds, pepitas, tart dried cherries, dried apricots, dates, dark chocolate chunks, and ground flaxseed. No fillers. No artificial junk.
Flavor-wise, they hit that sweet spot — literally. The Cherry Chocolate balances the richness of peanut butter and almonds with a subtle sweetness from the fruit and chocolate. The texture is equally balanced, with a satisfying mix of chew and crunch.
Overall, Shark Bars land squarely in that rare middle ground — tasty without being cloying, fueling without feeling heavy. It’s a great option for anyone who wants a snack that actually satisfies without leading to a sugar crash. And for someone like me — who can let snacking get a little out of hand — it’s nice to find something that feels indulgent without being empty calories.
