Run Oregon Test Kitchen: Gigantic Candy

Halloween may have just wrapped up, but while the candy’s gone, that sweet tooth is still hanging around. I’m not one for punishing myself with food choices — I try to keep things balanced and realistic. For me, completely cutting out treats usually just leads to a bigger crash later.

So, yes, I’ve got a sweet tooth. But I also try to be smart about it. The problem? The options usually feel like a lose-lose — either the over-the-top, sugar-packed Halloween-style candy, or the “healthy” stuff that tastes like cardboard and often isn’t all that healthy anyway.

Enter Gigantic Candy, a company that seems to have found that elusive middle ground — a treat that tastes good, feels real, and doesn’t go overboard. Their mini bars are about the size of a Kit Kat finger and come in four flavors:

I really liked the flavor of these (and my kids did not – which I actually consider it a win). I really appreciated that the candy bar tastes like it was made for adults – using dark chocolate and a reducted sweetness profile. Each kind gave you enough flavor without it being an overwhelming bomb.

Each bar clocks in at just 100 calories and uses real organic sugar — about half the sugar of a traditional candy bar, ounce for ounce. Their Italian dark chocolate is organic and Fairtrade certified, and Gigantic is even on the Food Empowerment Project’s recommended list.

A box of 20 runs about $48, so yeah, it’s not cheap. But that’s kind of the point — these aren’t meant to be mindlessly devoured by the handful. They’re small, flavorful, and satisfy that craving without the crash.

Case in point: the other night, I had an early dinner and around 7:30 p.m. that sweet craving hit. I grabbed one of these little mini-bars, and it completely hit the spot. No guilt, no sugar rush, just a perfectly portioned treat.

At the end of the day, you could reach for a lot worse to satisfy a late-night craving. Gigantic isn’t pretending to be health food, but it’s a smarter, more balanced way to indulge. A little sweetness, real ingredients, and no regret — that’s a combo we can get behind.
