Sonic Boom: ASICS SonicBlast Announces Itself with Authority

ASICS has been on a hot streak lately, rolling out one strong release after another. The SonicbBlast is the latest to join the lineup, and it comes at a time when the brand feels like it’s really hitting its stride. This shoe is positioned as a plated daily uptempo trainer, and after logging miles in it, I can say it does more than just fill a gap—it might even push the Superblast for top billing.

In fact, it may even be my shoe of the year…

Looks:

From the first glance, the Sonicblast gives off fast vibes. The mostly white base keeps it versatile enough to pair with any kit, while purple accents add just the right amount of personality without shouting for attention. Compared to its sibling—the soon-to-be-reviewed MegaBlast, which leans heavy into a deep purple explosion—the Sonicblast flips the script with a cleaner, fresher look.

I’ll admit I’ve only recently come around to white shoes, which feels risky with Oregon rain right around the corner, but these just look sharp. The mix of clean white and underused purple feels modern, fast, and a little bit classy—and ASICS nails it here.

Construction & Fit:

The Sonicblast sits in that supertrainer space where daily miles meet plated pop. It combines brand-new foam with a familiar midsole layer and a plate sandwiched between. The overall package is bouncy, stable for its height, and surprisingly comfortable.

Step-in feel is excellent, with a true-to-size fit and stretchy laces that lock things down with ease. Honestly, it’s a joy to put on. For a 46/38mm platform, the ride feels grounded. It’s not a stability shoe, but it doesn’t wobble the way some high-stack options can. Think of it as sitting above the Novablast in ASICS’ lineup, but with extra firepower.

Specs:

  • Weight: 9.0 oz. (men’s 10)
  • Heel Drop: 8mm
  • Stack: 46mm/38mm
Upper:

The jacquard mesh upper hits the balance of breathable and secure. It fits snug without being restrictive, with just enough give to work for most foot widths.

A gusseted tongue, lightly padded collar, and structured heel counter provide support without over thinking it. It feels like a smart blend between stripped-down racer and daily trainer comfort.

Midsole

This is where the Sonicblast earns its name.

  • Top layer: FlyteFoam Turbo Squared (brand-new ATPU compound)
  • Plate: AstroPlate (Pebax)
  • Bottom layer: FF Blast Max (familiar from the Novablast 5)

On the run, the shoe comes alive. The Turbo Squared foam feels soft but springy, the Pebax plate adds pop, and the FF Blast Max balances the ride. The result is lively but never sloppy, cushioned without being mushy. More than once, I found myself clipping along faster than intended—a sign of a shoe that makes running fun.

Outsole:

ASICSGrip rubber provides traction and durability without going overboard. Even with plenty of exposed foam, 30-plus miles in I’ve only seen light scuffing and dirt. It feels like it’s built to last while keeping weight down.

Overall:

The ASICS Sonicblast is a strong entry into the plated trainer category, and it may be the best balance of fun and function ASICS has put out yet. It’s versatile enough for uptempo training while cushioned enough to handle daily work, and it never feels like too much shoe.

If you’ve been a fan of the Novablast or Superblast, this one should be on your radar. ASICS has clearly found a rhythm—and the Sonicblast keeps the beat going.
