If there’s one shoe that epitomizes the spirit of Hoka, it’s the Bondi. As a hallmark of cushioned comfort and versatility, the Bondi has earned its reputation as a dependable daily trainer. The Bondi 9 marks the first update in two years, bringing significant upgrades that signal a return to form. Spoiler alert: it’s a winner! Let’s dive into what makes the Bondi 9 a standout.

Looks
The Bondi 9 is the quintessential Hoka. If you closed your eyes and tried to imagine a Hoka shoe, this would probably be it. The iconic oversized midsole and streamlined design scream comfort, performance, and the brand’s unique identity.

Our review pair in a light, airy blue colorway exudes “Hokaness” to the core, making it one of the more striking shoes we’ve reviewed in a while. Hoka knows how to appeal to a broad audience and we already see a few basic options, as well as more colorful ones, to match your preferences. The women’s version we received, the blue spark/mint fluorite colorway, also has splashes of classic black interweaved in which looks pretty sharp.
Construction and Fit
The Bondi 9 takes a step forward with upgraded construction, improving both comfort and functionality. The collar is noticeably cushier than in previous iterations, giving your foot a cozy, padded hug. When you step into the Bondi 9, the immediate impression is one of comfort. The fit feels secure but not overly tight, allowing for natural foot movement. As someone who has been dealing with foot pain later the extra room is welcome.

Hoka shoes are a bit wide compared to many other shoe brands, and though I often size up a full size from my regular shoes in running shoes, I don’t always find that to be necessary with Hokas. I did get the Bondi a full size up and didn’t find my feet sliding around in them or feel they were uncomfortable. I do think a half size up would have been sufficient due to the fact that Hokas are just “a whole lotta” shoe.
This cozy step-in feel is ideal for cooler climates and Oregon’s ever-changing weather. However, in warmer months may want to transplant in something more breathable.
Specs
- Stack Height: 43mm/38mm (mens); 42mm/37mm (womens)
- Heel-to-Toe Drop: 5mm
- Weight: ~10.5 oz (men’s size 9)
Upper
The Bondi 9’s new engineered mesh upper features several upgrades that make it stand out from its predecessor. The added padding around the collar enhances comfort, giving the shoe a snug yet plush feel. The beefed-up collar is definitely noticeable, but really makes those ankles feel secure.

The lockdown is solid, ensuring your foot stays secure even during longer outings. The tongue, though not gusseted, doesn’t shift or create any discomfort.
Midsole
The new midsole is where the Bondi 9 truly shines. Hoka has incorporated a full-length supercritical EVA foam, marking a significant upgrade in cushioning. This foam not only reduces weight but also delivers a softer, more shock-absorbing ride, which is ideal for runners dealing with foot pain (like myself) or looking for extra comfort.

Adding 2mm of stack height compared to the Bondi 8, this iteration feels plush without being too overly bulky. I mean, any 40mm+ stack is gonna be bulky in some sense – but I thought it was pretty decent. The MetaRocker technology enhances transitions, creating a smooth and propulsive stride.
For those like me – dealing with issues like Morton’s Neuroma – the combination of the wide platform and soft cushioning can be a game-changer. I mean, it’s not like it’s a magical cure-all, but I found the extra room and cushion a positive. It’s not technically a stability shoe, but its ample base and supportive feel might make it an unexpected ally for runners needing extra support.
Outsole
The outsole of the Bondi 9 retains the tried-and-true design of its predecessors. Featuring thicker coverage with Durabrasion rubber, it provides reliable grip and durability across various surfaces.
While the outsole doesn’t introduce groundbreaking innovations, it performs its role exceptionally well. The grip feels solid on most surfaces, from pavement to light trails, making the Bondi 9 a versatile option for a range of running conditions.

Conclusion
HOKA is not the brand for everyone, but in my experience, the people that love them REALLY love them. Though I test a lot of shoes for Run Oregon, HOKA is one of only a few brands I return to again and again. They are quality shoes that last a long time and they feel great on my feet.
The Hoka Bondi 9 is a welcome, perhaps overdue, update to the Bondi line, blending modern innovations with the classic features that runners and walkers have come to love. With its plush cushioning, enhanced comfort, and wider platform, it’s an excellent choice for those seeking a reliable daily trainer. It’s also a go-to for those who work on their feet all day. Whatever you may need it for, the new Bondi 9 delivers.
